You’ve heard his name over and over in the last couple of years, but how much do you really know about Donald Trump? Many people avoid keeping up on politics. If you haven’t been keeping up, you’ve missed a whirlwind of a presidency. Here is a recap of everything you need to know about Donald Trump.
1. Trump led a group of “non-birthers” who believed Obama was born in Kenya
Trump claims he coined the phrase “fake news”, referring to erroneous reports against him, but he might be the one who starts fake news. During Obama’s presidency, Trump was very vocal about his belief that Obama was born in Kenya. If Obama was born in Kenya, it would disqualify him from the presidency. Obama quickly provided his birth certificate as proof of where he was born. Trump still seemed satisfied with himself.
2. He has had many failed businesses
Trump has dipped his toe in just about any business that came his way. Most were successful. Some, however, were not as lucrative. He has filed bankruptcy on several companies, but he has never filed personal bankruptcy. The truth of the matter is that this is part of doing business. Some things simply don’t work out. Filing bankruptcy shows that he knows when it’s time to let something go.
3. Trump won the 2016 election against Hillary Clinton
Clinton was the career politician with a controversial husband. Trump was the political newcomer and businessman sent to shake things up. People liked the idea of a businessman in charge. While Clinton marginally took the popular vote, Trump clearly won the electoral college.
4. Porn star Stormy Daniels came out with allegations of infidelity and hush money
Trump has a gorgeous wife named Melania. Despite his gorgeous wife, a porn star named Stormy Daniels came forward with allegations that she had slept with the president during his marriage. Even more, she claims that he had his lawyer pay her $130,000 in hush money to keep her quiet. She clearly decided to open her mouth. She even came out with a book.
5. Trump met with North Korea leader Kim Jung Un.
America has had a tumultuous relationship with North Korea for an extended period of time. Trump became the first sitting president to visit with Kim Jung Un. While recent statements may have tainted the relationship, he left on a positive note.
6. Trump is the third president to have articles of impeachment filed against him
There are claims that Trump insisted that to receive aide, the president of Ukraine investigate Biden (his biggest competition for the presidency in 2020) and his son. While the Democrats will likely vote to impeach him in the House, it’s unlikely that the Senate will vote him out. He will stay in office.
7. Trump is likely to win in 2020
The odds for Trump look good in 2020. David Urban reminds us of a poll that found that Trump is favored to win against a Democratic opponent 46% to 40%. While not a huge majority, it shows where people are leaning for the next election. Also according to David Urban, people in swing states like Pennsylvania appreciate the way Trump wants to boost the local economy.
